What is a ‘vertebral subluxation’?

This is a term regularly used by chiropractors to describe an area of the spine that may cause your nervous system not to function as well as it could.  The nerves that exit and reenter the spine are the conveyors of messages between your brain and your body, and great spinal health is imperative for great overall function.

Will I be sore after my adjustment?

Occasionally, there will be a period of ‘re-adjustment’ as your body becomes accustomed to being realigned.  There may be some stiffness, and even soreness (headache, joint pain), but this usually settles within a few hours or days.

What is the noise the joint makes when it’s adjusted?

There is a common misconception that the noise is the bones being ‘crunched’; in fact it is gas (a mixture of nitrogen, carbon dioxide and oxygen) being released from the joint capsule as the joint is realigned.

Do I have to be ‘cracked’?

No, in fact, you don’t have to be cracked to be adjusted!  There are many different ways that chiropractors can adjust the spine, and our chiropractors are all highly skilled in different techniques.

I’m scared/anxious/nervous to have my neck manipulated, I’ve heard that it’s dangerous.

Chiropractic adjustments are different to other manual manipulation techniques.  Each joint is analysed and then corrected by your chiropractor in a specific line of drive, using a high velocity low amplitude (HVLA) thrust.  Only one joint is addressed at a time, there are no ‘global’ manipulations, making chiropractic care very specific and safe (see below).  Our chiropractors will assess you individually to determine the best way to adjust you, and as it states above, there are other ways to be adjusted that are just as effective, and in fact many techniques require no rotation, clicking or popping. How do you adjust babies/children?  Do you crack them?

No.  Babies and children are adjusted very gently, using either an Activator adjusting instrument, or with very light pressure applied to a specific point.  Babies and children are incredibly easy to adjust as they haven’t experienced as much stress on their systems as adults have.

How long do I have to see you for/how many visits will it take until I’m better?

This is a tricky one to answer.  Every individual is different, and it all depends upon your health goals.  Many individuals and families are on ‘wellness’ care, which means they are adjusted regularly as a preventative measure of health care.  This wellness care comes after an intensive period of initial care, where we establish changes to your body and nervous systems that allow you to function better.  This initial period of care can take weeks or months, dependent upon chronicity (how long you’ve been this way) and your current state of health.
